Beschreibung
The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean and consists of 13 large volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 rocks and islets. The formation of the first island took place more than 5 million years ago as a result of tectonic activity. Younger islands are Isabela and Fernandina and are still in process of formation, the most recent eruption was in 2009.
Under the presidency of Juan José Flores, the Galapagos Islands were annexed by Ecuador, on February 12, 1832, and from February 18, 1973 they are considered an Ecuadorian province
Lage und Verkehrsanschluss
The Seymour Airport in Baltra, also known as Galapagos Ecological Airport, is the gateway to the islands. It is located on Baltra Island, a small uninhabited island of the archipelago; its few activities are airport and military related.
It is located within walking distance from Santa Cruz Island, the most populous city of the province and with the best tourist infrastructure.
Baltra Island is surrounded by arid vegetation that is made of salt bushes, cactus and “palo santo” trees. It is the natural habitat of the Baltra land iguana.
